Your Complete Guide to Permanent Makeup Aftercare

Your Complete Guide to Permanent Makeup Aftercare

You’ve done your research, chosen a master artist, and invested in a life-changing permanent makeup procedure. Now, the ball is in your court. The success of your result depends 50% on the artist’s skill and 50% on how well you follow your permanent makeup aftercare instructions. Proper healing is the only way to ensure that the pigment settles correctly, the color remains vibrant, and your skin remains healthy. Whether you’ve had microblading, lip blushing, or medical tattooing, understanding the principles of post-procedure maintenance is essential for a flawless finish.

At Kim Apple Beauty, we prioritize client education. Our studio in Palm Beach Gardens provides every client with detailed, written instructions, but we know that having a comprehensive online resource is just as important. In this guide, we will break down the “dos and don’ts” of permanent makeup aftercare and explain the science of the healing process. Following these steps will protect your investment and ensure you love your results for years to come in Jupiter, West Palm Beach, and across South Florida.

The Golden Rule: Keep It Clean and Dry

The most important principle of permanent makeup aftercare is to treat the treated area like an open wound—because it is. During the first 7 to 10 days, your primary goal is to prevent infection and avoid “washing out” the pigment before the skin has a chance to close.

  • No Water: Avoid getting the area wet in the shower or when washing your face. For brows, use a damp cloth to clean the rest of your face.
  • No Sweating: Skip the gym! Sweat contains salt, which can draw the pigment out of the skin and cause patchy results. This is a common pitfall for our active clients in Jupiter Inlet.
  • No Makeup: Do not apply any makeup, creams, or sunscreen directly on the treated area until it is fully healed (typically 10-14 days).
  • Hands Off: Do not touch, scratch, or pick at any scabs or flaking skin. Picking will pull the pigment out and can lead to scarring.

The 10-Day Healing Timeline

Understanding what to expect will help you navigate the permanent makeup aftercare process without unnecessary anxiety. Every person heals differently, but this is the general timeline:

Days 1-2: The “Dark and Bold” Phase

Immediately after your procedure, the color will look much darker and more intense than the final result. This is normal. The pigment is sitting on top of the skin and hasn’t settled yet. You may experience slight redness or swelling.

Days 3-5: The “Flaking” Phase

As the skin begins to heal, it may start to flake or peel. It might look like the pigment is coming off entirely—don’t panic! This is the top layer of skin shedding. Continue your permanent makeup aftercare by resisting the urge to pick.

Days 6-10: The “Ghosting” Phase

Once the flaking stops, the color may look very light or even disappear. This is called the “ghosting” phase. The new skin is thick and opaque, hiding the pigment underneath. Over the next few weeks, the skin will thin out, and the color will “bloom” back to the surface.

Days 30-45: The Final Result

The healing process is complete. This is when we can truly see how the pigment has settled. This is also when you will return for your “perfecting session” to finalize the color and shape.

Specific Aftercare by Procedure

While the general rules apply to all PMU, some procedures have unique permanent makeup aftercare requirements:

  • Brows: We have a dedicated guide for Microblading Aftercare that goes into even more detail.
  • Lips: Lip blushing requires constant hydration with a specialized balm provided by your artist. Avoid spicy or salty foods for the first few days.
  • Scalp: SMP maintenance is slightly different. Avoid hats and sun exposure for the first week. See our SMP Maintenance Guide for more.
  • Medical/Areola: Keep the area protected with a sterile dressing as instructed by your artist. Avoid tight clothing that may rub against the site.

You can see how we integrate these standards into our Permanent Makeup Overview.

Long-Term Maintenance: Protecting Your Investment

Once you have moved past the initial permanent makeup aftercare phase, long-term care is what ensures your results last for years.

  • Sun Protection: UV rays are the number one cause of pigment fading. Once healed, always wear a high-SPF sunscreen over your permanent makeup.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Be careful with skincare products containing Retin-A, AHA/BHA, or chemical exfoliants. These can speed up the cell turnover and cause the pigment to fade faster.
  • Regular Touch-Ups: Permanent makeup is “semi-permanent.” Most clients benefit from a “color boost” every 12 to 24 months to keep their look fresh.

Safety and Professional Guidance

At Kim Apple Beauty, we adhere to the highest clinical standards of hygiene. If you experience any signs of infection—such as extreme pain, spreading redness, or pus—contact your artist and a medical professional immediately. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sleep on my face? We recommend sleeping on your back for the first 10 days to avoid rubbing the treated area against your pillow.

When can I wash my face normally? Once the area is completely done flaking (usually 10-14 days), you can return to your normal routine.

Why does it look so dark at first? The pigment is freshly deposited and mixed with a small amount of blood and lymph fluid, which oxidizes and looks darker. It will lighten by 30-50% once healed.

What happens if I pick a scab? You will likely pull the pigment out of that spot, leaving a gap in the color. You also increase the risk of infection and scarring.

Is aftercare different for oily skin? Yes. Clients with oily skin may need to be even more diligent about keeping the area dry, as excess oil can affect pigment retention.
